Heroes are people who help other people. They are not selfish and do right things. For many years Christopher Columbus has been considered a hero. In schools they teach students how he discovered America and how he had an adventure. But what text books and stories cover up the bad things which will show he is not a hero.

First of all Christopher Columbus is said to be the person who discovered America. But there were people already living in America. So does this still mean he discovered it? An example is if you had an idea but not much people knew about and another thinks of that same idea later. Should he be considered the person who came up with the idea fist? No, so Columbus should not be credited as the discoverer of America.

Secondly a lot of people say that slavery is wrong. People don’t like a lot white people because they had slaves. But what text books and stories cover is that Columbus took the Native Americans as slaves. He tricked them to take their gold and other goods. Then he took them back to Spain as slaves.

Christopher Columbus enslaved all of the men. Then he used the women to have sex and had children with them. He used some to find gold. Then he sold the rest in Spain. So should a hero be slave holder.

Aside from using them as slaves he killed them. He killed them if they didn’t do the job right. Then he killed them if they did not find the right amount of gold he wanted. When he killed them he made them die a painful death. He used to cut there hands and make them bleed to death.

He did not also kill them like that. He also killed them with diseases. Columbus and his men gave the Native Americans small pox. This killed a lot of them. Also since they sex with the women they gave them STDs.

In conclusion, Christopher Columbus was not a hero. First he didn’t really discover America he took credit for it. Then he used the Native Americans as slaves. Lastly he killed them leaving large amounts of land with no Native Americans. So are these here qualities?

A hero to me is someone who have saved lives, who care about people, a person who does good never bad and is willing to help other people with their need, and Christopher Columbus is not that kind of person. people might think he is not the texts books frankly tells you he was a bad man.

Everyone believes Christopher Columbus is the person who discovered America. but the texts also tells you that a small group of people lived here before Columbus, and since he was the one who told everyone about america, everyone just assumed he was the one who discovered it.

some of the bad things Columbus did was he killed a lot of people and also taking women and children as slaves for sex and labor. i don't think a person who does something like this should not be consided a hero.

Christopher Columbus used some of the slaves to find gold and enslaved the men. he mostly killed them after using them and also if what he wants is not done well, he kills you. it's like he just killed people for a living.

what Columbus did was, if what he want is not done rite or what he wants found isn't found than he just kills you, and he makes sure it a very painful death because he cuts your hand off and leaves you there to bleed to death, that was what he did to the Indians.

Columbus and his men give the Indians an
impossible task, the gold around where they were was bits of dust garnered from the streams. so they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed, and also give the women STD by having sex with them.

In conclusion Columbus is not a hero, he didn't do any good, all he did was kill and hurt people. so by reading story's about him and finding out who he really was, i don't find him to be a hero in any way, shape or form.

A hero in my opinion is someone who knows what is right or wrong. The second Monday in October is celebrated across America as Columbus Day. It is a celebration of the man who discovered America. In school we the students are taught Christpher Columbus as a national hero. But in truth Columbus is a murder.
It is true that he found a land that was unknown to the civilized world, yet in this discovery, he desroyed the natives living on the land.Christopher Columbus and the men who a was him completely destroyed a people, a culture, and land. With slavery, warfare, and cruel acts, he destroyed the lives of many Indians and their culture.
When Columbus showed up their land and saw their nakedness, his thoughts were that they lacked of culture, customs, and religion. Columbus saw this as an opportunity to spread the word of God, while at the same considering how they could possibly be used for his own selfish reasons.A quote that Columbus described the Indians by saying"are so naive and so free with their possessions that no one who has not witnessed them would believed it." He just wanted to used them to get the gold he wanted, so he used their good nature against them.
Columbus began exporting slaves in great numbers in 1494.The Indians that were not exported were put into slavery on the island. At times, they would make an example of an Indian by cutting his hands off and tying them around his neck, telling him to then go and share the message. These are the types of cruel activities undertaken by the men that Columbus led.Christopher Columbus was not only a good explorer, he was a deceitful one at that, stopping at nothing to get his way or convince people that he is right. He used his religion to make people aroung him think that it was his right to do whatever he wanted.
'The native men were sent many miles away to the mines, their wives remained to work the soil, forced into excruciating jobs digging.'
By working these people so bad they started to by by large amount of numbers.Columbus didn't treat the natives well, they were barely fed. The women, children, and infants started to die also from the lack of food. The Indian wanted to "save" themselves and their children by killing themselves.
How is what Columbus did was heroic? What he did ws mass murder. "The Spaniards thought nothing of knifing Indians by tens and twenties and of cutting off them to test the sharpness of their blades. Columbus was so desperate to please the King and Queen of Spain that he didnt care what happen to the Indians.
Christopher Columbus is in no way a hero. All he did was encounter unknown lands while trying to get to Asia. He did not even manage to complete his initial goal of finding a commercially viable. His great accomplishment was the destruction of an entire population. He didnt care for anyone other than himself. He brought destruction and racism to the Indians. That is not what a hero should be considered as.

Christopher Columbus was a navigator, colonizer and explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. With his four voyages of exploration and several attempts at establishing a settlement on the island of Hispaniola, all funded by Isabella I of Castile, he initiated the process of Spanish colonization which foreshadowed general European colonization of the "New World."
But the question still remains unanswered, Should Christopher Columbus be remembered as a hero? That is up to you to say. Christopher Columbus also has dark chapters in his story of heroism. He murdered hundreds of innocent people in which he tries to justify as being a result of his religious beliefs. How can you call yourself a hero if you have committed villainous crimes?
I feel that he should not be remembered as a hero because, he did not show any characteristics of a hero during the time period when he was alive. I feel as though he was a lucky uncivilized criminal who created a legacy of himself discovering one of the most important things in the history of America, which is the discovery of America itself. He doesn’t deserve to be viewed by millions as a hero or one of the great men of his time.
I feel this way because he couldn’t even own up to his mistakes and say that he was wrong for what he had done. I don’t understand how he could blame the things that he wasn’t proud of himself doing on his religious beliefs. He was catholic and it doesn’t state anywhere in the codes or rules of Catholicism that it is ever alright to murder another human being. He slayed many Native Americans and islanders because they supposedly didn’t want to convert to Catholicism.
But they really didn’t even understand what he was saying because he was speaking in tones and language in which they couldn’t possibly understand. Whoever was not murdered was enslaved and used for manual labor. Columbus believed that he was doing the right thing by putting to use for something productive. Besides they didn’t want to convert to his religion anyway so they should be grateful that they weren’t killed.
But when It comes down to the main point Christopher Columbus still played a part in American history. Therefore he most definitely should be remembered but in no similarity to a hero. He is a murderer and a criminal. Also for no reasons at all should he be given the title of a hero.
Christopher Columbus was a navigator, colonizer and explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. Hero- a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. To me, a hero is a person who is respected, looked up to, and admired for what he or she does. Everyone wants to be a hero at some point in his, or her life. Theres always somebody who wants to be respected and a advice giver or wants to "stick up" for someone.

Christopher Columbus was once said, to be the one who discovered America. Which is really not true. After the class discussion, i learned that technically, the Arawaks discovered America. However, thats a discussion for another day. Christopher Columbus was just the man who made America "known".

When Christopher Columbus arrived on the Bahamas Island , he was greeted with gifts from the Arawaks. With that, he gave them weapons. The Arawaks, for some odd reason, thought Columbus and his people came to save and protect them. From what? Who knows. But that why they started off bowing down to them. Showering him with gifts. Doing all that he said. He was there Hero.

All Christopher Columbus books where made out to make readers believe that he was was this big hero of America. As we began taking, what we called "Social Studies" in Elementary School, they introduce Columbus as this man who shows up on a piece of land and "saves" these Indians. Now because they already introduced Columbus as this, theres defintely no turning back or switching the story around. It was way too late. However, when we entered High School, it was then until we learned the TRUTH about Christopher Columbus.

Christopher Columbus was a mass murderer of his time. When he arrived on this Island, he took advantage of these poor Arawaks and then began to kill them or torture them when they didnt follow his rules. Rules? How dare he show up on someones else Island and began to take over and make RULES? That was when it all started.

After you accidentally break a rule, do you expect you parents or hero to slice your hand off? No, that is not a real hero. To me, that a abuser. Christpher Columbus was suppose to be the brave one out of the bunch. The one to help them through there obstacles. Instead, he forced them to do stuff they didnt wanna do and he was there obstacle maker.

In conclusion, Christopher Columbus was NOT a hero. He was just, basically, a trouble maker. He caused so much trouble for the Arawaks, so many deaths, and so much nonsense to these innocent people. He was a total terror to there Island.

Hero is a person that has admire people for doing something brave or has noble qualities. Remember is when you recall something in your mind. Christopher Columbus discovered "The America's". Should Christopher be remembered as a hero? I think he shouldn't because no one has exposed him for the bad things he did.

Christopher Columbus his consider as a "Big Hero". In novel books they put the truth. But in textbooks they put only the good things "he did". People think that if it wanst for him we probably wouldnt be here in this country, but somewhere else.

People dont realize he found the America's in a mistake. He didnt really find the country, it was the Native Americans who found it. But people dont know that. People think that he found the country.

Christopher was a cold-hearted man. He would rape womens with his trrop. He used them to have sex during slavery. Then the man were free to work for him.

He treated the native americans like crap. He insolted there customs; belief; and religions. He would use them to find gold. If they did not come back with gold, they would get there hands cut off and they would bleed to death.

Natives were being killed. Womens, mens, and childern. In fact, they would actually kill themselves in order not to get caught. Christopher Columbus made them go thru way too much. They would barely get feed.

In conclusion , my point of view is that Christopher Columbus is not remembered as a hero to me. HE was cruel with othere humans. Since he claimed he found the "America's" he felt like big boss and decide to control over. He killed innocent people. And thats not what a hero is.

Hero-•a person distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength. Noble-distinguished by rank or title.Courage-the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. Does Columbus fit the description of a hero? Columbus does fit the description of a hero.

Nobility was key in Columbus' travels. Christopher Columbus was noble and determined. Traits that led him to become a powerful commander. With his hunger for money and a high title that made Columbus a noble man. He was determined to get what he wanted. In my opinion Columbus did just that making him a hero.

Along with his nobility Columbus was filled with courage. According to my knowledge Columbus was faced with issues throughtout the whole journey. He was faced with hard decisions and difficulty. Yet Columbus prevailed through it all and conquered the Arawakans. Another trait that supports the arguement that Columbus is indeed a hero.

With these traits Columbus sailed through and cleaned house on the Caribbean. He went in with a positive state of mind and declared that he would prevail by bringing gold land and slaves. Which he did and "founded" the Americas. All of these milestones make Columbus more than a hero. Some may consider Columbus an icon.

It is true that Columbus did his dirt. Indeed he killed millions and also made many suffer. It is no secret to anyone that Columbus killed many. It is written in many history books and articles. Columbus was no angel when it came to conquering the Arawak. He became a dirty and heartless person and enslaved any Arawakan he seen to please both the king and queen of Spain. Yet the good of Columbus' journey outweighs the bad.

As a child I was taught to "respect" Mr.Columbus because he was the reason I was here. Indeed as a child I respected him and thought he was awesome. Yet as I grew older I recognized the truth. That he did claim the Americas from people who were there first. That he did kill millions in private to gain supremacy and respect. Although these were cowardly moves he had purpose and a job to do.

In conclusion Christopher Columbus is a hero. He took over and took control. Handled his business and had a job to do. Indeed he completed his job and was rewarded for it. The good really does outweigh the bad especially in Columbus' case.

Harsh but it is a true fact. I think if people remember Christopher Columbus as a hero then every convict that committed homicide then they should also remember as a hero to. I say that because he killed many natives in his time and most of the convicts number of people cannot even add up to the number of people he killed. Hero means someone who commits an act or remarkable bravery. To me this does not mean Columbus.

I think if you consider a mass murder a hero I don’t know where your mind is. A mass murder is an act of murdering a large number of people. In the definition of hero it did not say killing a number of people because you wanted to. So if I go on a killing spree I think that I should be rewarded for that and even get a holiday.

The things that Columbus did to be remembered as a hero to some is kill, rape, sell, trick, out smart, and have no sense of direction. To the natives they probably thought that Columbus was a genius. He was so smart he probably saw their way of living and began to plan things out. I know when you prepare things like a basketball game you look at the best players the team have and Columbus might have looked at the things they had. Also by him being smart and tricking them he made them give him things so by that they loosened up.

People that I consider heroes are people that are fake. Like Superman he was a hero, Spiderman he was a hero, and Batman he was a hero. They really didn’t kill people sometimes. All they really did was beat that person up to a great extent. But Columbus killed for money he didn’t have a reason for killing them.

To some Columbus is considered a hero because he so called discovered The America’s. He was a lost traveler he thought he found another way to get to Asia. Now I think everyone that reads things about Columbus should know that people was already here so how can you say that you discovered something. That’s like me saying I discovered an apple tree and people been eating apples before I was born. If that’s the case then how can you kill people if you discovered the Americas? What he brought them over here and then killed them.

Now who ever heard of a hero selling people? I never heard people that I consider heroes do such a thing like Columbus. He promised the king and queen that he would bring back gold and people to sell. Now that’s what I call a true hero. That’s funny that’s not what heroes do they don’t promise people for people to sell. That I know of because heroes are people who commit an act or remarkable bravery.
So today I don’t think that Christopher Columbus should be acknowledged for being a hero but I think that he should be acknowledged for being a mass murder. Columbus killed many natives in his time for no reason. In some eyes Columbus was a hero for discovering the Americas but the Americas already had people on it but they couldn’t make it know because they weren’t as advanced as Columbus was. Columbus also was known as a hero for selling people and I think that’s crazy. So I don’t think that Columbus should be known for being a hero maybe someone else can say that he should but I just don’t think he should.

A hero is a man of distinguished courage and ability, which is admired for his brave needs and noble qualities. To be remembered is to recall to the mind by an act or effort of memory, to retain in a recollection. Christopher Columbus was an Italian Explorer who lived from 1451 to 1506 and had a very successful life experience. Being remembered and portrayed as a hero is an untouched question dealing with Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus was a man of his word so therefore, he should be remembered for some of his positive actions, not all.

Columbus was a very religious person. He developed a strong faith within God, which helped him through most of his exploration. He would always recite a line from the Bible when he wanted to persuade someone to do something he knew was wrong and inhuman. “Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity go on sending all the slaves that can be sold.” This was the quote used when Columbus had many slaves in captivity. He especially used Gods name in vain before he slanged multiple slaves at a time.

Christopher Columbus was a man of his negative words. When he said something would get done it would happened within a matter of time. “They found no gold fields, but had to fill up the ships returning to Spain with some kind of dividend.” Even though he did not find what he was looking for, he promised the Spaniards something and he wasn’t going to leave without getting his part done. This is a great personal quality Columbus had that made him develop the trait of hospitality, only if he was getting something out of the deal.

Furthermore, Columbus was a determined person also. He was determined to complete a special task and never gave up until it was done or replaced with something of greater value. When he finally found the gold fields, he realized that he can enslave the people living in the same area of the gold fields. He wasn’t satisfied until he had over five hundred slaves to take back to the Spaniards and the gold he finally found. Determination was not a problem for him because he always found more than what he was looking for.

On the other hand, he was a very heartless and gruesome person. “They hanged them or burned them to death.” This is what the Spaniards did to the slaves for no apparent reason. They tortured the slaves for personal entertainment and to see them in pain and suffer. They would also play with the slaves’ lives by setting them free but having vicious dogs hunt them down and kill them. Columbus did not care for anyone except himself and his workers.

I think Christopher Columbus should not be remembered as a hero because he does not portray himself as one. He is a mastermind of human destruction and do not care for life on earth. He easily wiped out a whole race of people with no problem, regrets, or hesitation. This does not resemble the traits of a hero or someone that should have a National Holiday. He is a creator of a devastating genocide, which left many lives less.

In conclusion, Columbus should not be remembered as a hero but for a person that did the unimaginable. He had some qualities that made a side of him a good person with great energy, but as an overall person he should not be remembered at all. He made decisions that people couldn’t understand, and until this day people still will not understand what was going through his mind when he killed those people. Columbus true identity was revealed in a text that helped me come to my conclusion. Which is that he should and will not be remembered as a hero for those who did their research on the real Christopher Columbus.

I think Christopher Colombus is not an hero, because he put on a front for people like he is so perfect and doesn't do anything. Colombus is a deceivable person. A hero is a person thats always there to save the day and has noble qualities as a person. Colombus was a hipocrit in my opinion.

Colombus to me was portrayed as a hero, but really wasn't when the story went on and was being told. Zinn put in the article some false accusations that colombus did but at the same time did good.

Zinn covered up some of the things that colombus with good things. It's crazy how people would do anything to make people loook good to others. I think if colombus didn't cover up being someone else , more people would understand.

Colombus is probably a hero to some people because he founded the americas, and if he didn't find it we wouldn't be here. But we still would have been here because somebody else could have found it and been the creator.

Christopher Colombus is a person of faith and truth at times because he trys to do good but doesn't want to do it even if he try. Christopher Colombus was being followed by Zinn who was watching colombus all the time. Some things that colombus did were bad and Zinn twisted and made it something different.

Christopher Colombus was a faults man who didn't care about anybody else. He didn't want people to know that he was a mass murdere deep inside but everybody found out sooner than he thought. But instead he put on a front to show that he was a kind person. Some parts are surprising to me.

"He had his faults and his defects, but they were largely the defects of the qualities that made him great. His superb faith in god and in his own mission as the christ-bearrer to lands beyond the seas. But there was no flaw, no dark side to the most outstanding and essential of all his qualities."

  12. Many people believe that Christopher Columbus was a hero. They believe that he did so much.In fact they honor him & look forward to his day.People celebrate & remember his history & what they thought he did. They think that Columbus is a hero.In my opinion I dont think he should be remembered as a hero.
To me I dont believe that Columbus is a hero. Before when I only knew little of him I thought he accomplished so much. I thought he was honest & true to his game. I was taught that Columbus & his people were the first to find the island in the search of gold. This is what I lived by during my many years of history. That he was a hero.
That he did no wrong & I never heard of him making a mistake but always something good.He was the one who made my history.Columbus lived a different double life that we didnt know of.He didnt just have people with him he also mistreated them. The Natives that were with him werent even treated fairly.
Most of them he began to kill them when they were unless or didnt do what he wanted. He made them work for him without pay& only used them the whole time.Columbus enslaved them & through the whole hunt for gold all he did was think about himself. This is the Columbus I knew nothing about.
During that time he lied & became a person no one knew him to be. He changedonce he began to get what he wanted. He was rude & mean.He put up fronts & tried to please the King & Queen. He turned the Nativesinto basic slaves.
This went on the whole time in history & only the Natives knew & didnt tell.Because they were afraid.Besides the fact that he wasnt recognized for the real him, he is remembered for something he's not.
The real him has not been yet discussed.Im just realizing what he really did & that he took credit for something he didnt even do.I believe he shouldnt be remembered as a hero.He is far from one.-Kadisha Harris....[using ashly's email address.]...

    Essay Question:

Hero-is someone who do good things. Murderer- is someone who kills people. Slaves- people who are forced towork under their will. Christopher Columbus killed millions of people in his time. I believe that he shoudnt be remembered as a hero.

Firstly I would like to say that I dont believe that Christopher Columbus should be known as a hero. Hero's dont kill millions of people. He killed people just to get known. He once killed a whole civilization by himself. Those are not things a hero would do.

Secondly, Christopher Columbus had slaves. People didnt really know that women slaves all the time is horrible. He use to trick some people he was working with into being slaves. Hero's do not have slaves. A hero and a slave master can not be in the same catergory.

Thirdly, he wasnt even a man of his time so how could he be a hero? When I say that I mean he did thingssuch as broke the law all of the time. The worst thing of all he went against is own religion. All the things he couldnt do he did anyway. Christopher Columbus did all the wrong things to me hewas a disgrace, he should have been sent to jail.

It really wouldnt have mattered if Christopher Columbus had found America or not. If he wouldnt have found America someone else would have found it eventually. It's crazy how every year we celebrate a murderer. Most kids dont know him as a killer though, most teachers dont tell their students about him. I think they would rather have kids know him as a hero/leader instead of a murderer.

Christopher Columbus only cared about one person and that was himself. He often took credit for other people work. If any of his crew members discovered any land he would try to pay them off so people would think he discovered it. No one even know for sure if he found America, someone else could have found it. He did what he had to do so people would know about him. All Christopher Columbus wanted was power.

In conclusion I believe Christopher Columbus shouldnt be remembered as a hero. He killed millions of people before, he was also very selfish. He had slaves and raped them under their will. Lastly if he didnt find America somebody else would have, he really didnt find it because people was already on the land when he found it. Thats why i believe Christopher Columbus shouldnt be remembered as a hero.

A hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. A murderer is a person who commits murder. In my opinion, Columbus should not be viewed as a hero but a mass murder.

Columbus is not a hero. I say this because he was instructed by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand to bring back gold and slaves. He instead did something else, "discovered" America. He killed innocent people just so he can be recognized as a "hero".

"These Arawaks of the Bahama Islands were much like Indians on the mainland, who were remarkable for their hospitality, their belief in sharing. These traits did not stand out in the Europe of the Renaissance, dominated as it was by the religion of popes, the government of kings, and the frenzy for money that marked Western civilizatio and its first messenger to the Americans, Christopher Columbus."

I feel as though that Columbus couldn't own up for his unruly power-hungry mentality. The historian tried to skate over the fact that Coulmbus was a murderer. He did in fact mention the murderous deeds he committed. He, in a sense, sugar coated what Coulmbus did. He called it genocide but I believe it was something way worse.

"Because of Columbus's exaggerated report and promises, his second expedition was given seventeen ships and more than 1200 men. The aim was clear: slaves and gold. They went from island in the Caribbean, takin Indians as captives. But as word spread of the Europeans' intent they found more and more empty villages. On Haiti, they found that the sailors left behind at fort Navidad had been killed in a battle with the Indians, after they had roamed the island in gangs looking for gold, taking women and children as slaves for sex and labor."

IN my opinion, Coulumbus was not a her of his time but a murderer of his time. He took advantage of the Arawaks and killed them off one by one so there would be no sign that Arawaks lived there. He did this so it would look like he was a acutal discoverer. Be he actually wasn't.

In conclusion, Coulmbus was not a hero. He killed thousands. Enslaved many and took over as if nothing happened. Now tell me... does he sound like a hero to you? Cause he doesn't to me
