  2. Death and innocent bloodshed accompanied the adventures of Christopher Columbus, five hundred years ago. The European invasion of the Indian Settlement in the Americas. This is just like in the book “1984”. In the book and in the story of Christopher Columbus’ adventures they are both trying to justify the wrong that they have done. In a way they are attempting to rewrite history which can never really be done without writing it on paper, but it still is not the truth.
In both stories someone was trying to put a veil over the wrong that was done. In the story of Christopher Columbus he enslaved many of foreigners and tortured them. This caused a drastic drop in their population over time. He affected the lives of native Americans and islanders their population is not as vast as Caucasians and Hispanics because of the things that he has done. It is crazy me because something that he had done hundreds of years ago has such an effect on the present.
In the book “1984”, Big Brother which is the government has workers such as Winston to rewrite history so that it can make him have a better image. He wants the world to view him as a hero, when really he has deceived them all. He has them living in a controlled environment just as Columbus had the Native Americans living as slaves in unsanitary living conditions. They were living a very similar lifestyle; the only difference was that the citizens from the book weren’t aware that they were basically being slaves.
In the story of Christopher Columbus by Zinn, if the Native Americans were disobedient or tried to do something among the lines of escaping, they were punished. They were either punished by death or by being severely whipped or injured. In 1984 they were sentenced to laser execution if the violation was severe enough. They were living their lives in a futuristic mirror of what Columbus had enforced upon the Native Americans.
I feel as though there was nothing that they could possibly have done to escape their fate because of the idea that Columbus came up with in terms of controlling and manipulating people and controlling their living conditions. In a way Christopher Columbus’ spirit lives on in the essence of big brother. In the way that the author of 1984 describes the future it is like it was kind of like it was destined for that fate to fall upon the people of the future. It was impossible for them to escape their fate.
In the Oceana incident there was a lot of things that paralled ta Christopher Columubus’ incident when he suposably founded America. The efforts made by the party to erase the memory of the Oceania incident was justified by the god’s will. They believed that god would have wanted them to delete that from their history for they could become the utopia they wanted to be afterall.
In conclusion the efforts made by the Party in erasing the history of Oceania paralleled to the history we have been told about Christopher Columbus. Death and innocent bloodshed accompanied the adventures of Christopher Columbus, five hundred years ago. The European invasion of the Indian Settlement in the Americas. In both stories someone was trying to put a veil over the wrong that was done. In the story of Christopher Columbus he enslaved many of foreigners and tortured them. They were living a very similar lifestyle; the only difference was that the citizens from the book weren’t aware that they were basically being slaves.

History is constantly being modified with facts. Some facts uncover things and others just make things look better. What the history of Oceania and Christopher Columbus are done to are parallel. Which means what they did to them is similar. The next few paragraphs are going to explain how they are parallel.

First of all Oceania is trying to have a Utopian city. To be a Utopian city Big Brother has to seem perfect. So in the Records Department they try to do that. So in the records department they have workers change their history. To change their history they change facts on newspapers.

The changing of the facts removes all the wrongs they did or flips stories around. This makes them seem as heroes. This will get the people to admire them or worship them. As a result if someone doesn’t do what they say they look like the bad ones instead of Big Brother. This will make controlling the city easier for Big Brother.

Then Christopher Columbus is considered a big hero. People say if it wasn’t for him we would not be were we are now. In text books it states how he discovered places and how he had an adventure. But in reality he discovered those places by mistake.
They put all the good things he did while he was on those places.

How he found gold and help Spain get a lot of land. But what they try to cover up is how he took advantage of the Native Americans. He took advantage of them because they were not as advanced as them. They didn’t have the weapons. But one important thing was they were not immune to the Europeans diseases.

This led to the death of thousands of Native Americans. But in text book and stories it doesn’t say that. They try to hide all that. But historians uncovered all that and showed that he did bad things to. Many historians considered it as genocide.

In common their histories hide something. They hide the bad things they did. It hides that to make them look like heroes. In Oceania they want to look like heroes to have a Utopian City. Then in Christopher Columbus’s history they wanted to make him look like a hero because they didn’t want the person they considered the discoverer of America to be considered a bad person. That is how what is done to their histories is parallel.

    Essay #3

Justify-to show (an act, claim, statement, etc.) to be just or right. History-a continuous, systematic narrative of past events as relating to a particular people, country, period, person, etc. Lying- a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.Sixty percent of people lied during a 10 minute conversation. I believe there is no such thing as justifying the reason to making a wrong decision.

Columbus justified his wrong and deadly choice by using religion. He was full of religious talk: "Thus the eternal God, our Lord gives us victory to those who follow His way over apperent impossibilities." In "1984", Big Brother justified his wrong life changing by getting other people to change history for him. This place is called the Department of Record. This is also the place Winston Smith works at (as if he had a choice).

In "1984", Big Brother wants to be viewed as the hero instead of the "bad guy". He wants people in the future to veiw him as a great leader. He doesn't want to be judged for what he does behind closed door, in a sense. He hires people to do his dirty work so that he can look good and recieve all the credit. He has everyone under controll just as Columbus had the Arawak living as slaves in unsanitary living conditions.

In 1495, Columbus went on a great slave raid. He rounded up fifteen hundred Arawark men, women, and children. He put them in pens guarded by Spainards and dogs. Columbus later wrote: " Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity go on sending all the slaves that can be sold." He was controlling the enviroment as well.

In "1984" if you are caught disrespecting Big Brother in any way shape or form you would be killed. Here we are met with the conflict of Winston Smith. He is caught in a wirting frenzy say "Down with Big Brother." He now fears for his life because he is constantly watched and isn't sure who may find out or if he would crack under pressure.

The Native Americans were so controlled and they weren't use to being under the controlling power of Columbus "Religous" power. They would rather die instead of working under those harsh conditions. Among the Arawaks, mass suicides began, with cassave poison. Infants were killed to "save" them from the Spainards.

In conclusion, I believe that history is starting to repeat itself no matter if its fictional or non-fictional. The similarites between Columbus and the book "1984" are to close. They are written at two different times and the similarites are rediculous. Once again, I truly believe history is repeating itself.

How are the efforts made by the Party in erasing the history of Oceania paralleled to the history we have been told about Christopher Columbus?

In the book "1984" the party of which Winston Smith is under erases the history of Oceania. With them erasing the history they are removing any evidence of anything. Anything that should be noted from the country of Oceania was erased and would never be mentioned or brought forth again. With that it took away the culture and meaning of Oceania. In the next few paragraphs I will break down how erasing the history really means something to both the people but also the culture.

Contrary to "1984" Columbus, by Zinn also tells the story of erasing history. By reading Zinn's Columbus it's changed the whole perspective of Columbus and how he's viewed. Me personally my view on Columbus has taken a turn. Growing up I viewed Columbus as a hero who founded where we all are today. Now after reading Zinn's Columbus I now know that the history of Columbus was either erased,or reformated to make him seem like the hero he was once made out to seem like.

In "1984" Big Brother is made out to look like the good guy. When really he is the "mastermind" or the brains behind the devious and dirty acts. Winston Smith is made out to correct all these faults and make the bad guy seem good. With this he is perfecting the plan that big brother imposes. Big brother is indeed using Smith in my eyes for his actions.

In Columbus the story tells of a man who is in search for gold. He stumbles upon Spain and from there the story begins. In school I was taught that Columbus was a hero. Not only for his finding of America but his "heroic" decisons. I soon came to find out that lies were told and the truth was covered up. Columbus' story was also rewritten to make hims elf look heroic.

With the way Columbus treated the Arawaks it was best for him to cover the truth. I believe Columbus felt that he should be considered a hero for the things he did. He was so hellbent on bringing gold and slaves back that he did not notice the bad things he was doing. With that he ordered all the truth be covered up.If i was in that situation I would do the same.

In "1984" the situation is a tad bit different. Instead of having a purpose Big Brother has no purpose in doing the things he does. The actions he does carry over and he soon forces Smith to switch stories in order to save the party. With him doing so he is helping the habits of telling lies for Big Brother and the party. Smith also never had a choice in wheter he wanted to or not.

Both "1984" and Columbus share similarites and differences. Some differences are the difference in time and topics. Some similarities are the way of outcome possibly and the change of stories to benefit one's party. In conclusion both "1984" and Zinn's Columbus are parallel because both stories were changed to better the outcome of one's party or group.

  6. The efforts made by the Party in erasing the history of Oceania is parallel to the history to what we have been told about Columbus, is that their history was altered with. People had changed the events in the history to make the Party and Christopher Columbus look like heroes. In 1984, Winston worked in the record department. His job was to make the Party look like the best thing to happen to Oceania. In our history books, Christopher Columbus was a great explorer and a religious man. The stories we always read about Columbus and what the people of Oceania, is what they want us to believe.

In the book 1984, the Party wants the people to believe that what they do is right. To make the people believe these things, they have to change what they read. In the book, it described that, it is Winston's job to change anything that might make the Party people look like the bad people. The Party didn't want the people rebelling against them. Many people believe what they read about history. History to the people in Oceania explains allot about them and how somethings came about.

What we read in our history books about Columbus was that, he was a great explorer. Christopher Columbus killed hundreds and thousands of innocent people. Historians wouldn't want students to read those type of stuff about a great explorer, so they changed everything to make him look as if he was a hero. He only cared for the gold he was receiving from the Native Americans and the title he was receiving at the end of his voyage. Everything to him was right, so he had no regrets.

The Party even started to create a new dictionary. They didn't want the people to have thoughts that would consider to be a problem. That's to show that they wanted complete control of these people. All the books that were expired were sent to Winston. His job was to make all the changes required. The Party told him whatever they wanted to tell him.

In the history text, thy explained that Columbus was a great explorer, who discovered the world. What historians refused to write about, is what his voyage disadvantages were. To me he destroyed history too, when he killed that many Indians. To him if they didn't dress, talk, or have his religion, they were considered not human.

The similarities between the Party and Columbus is that they both gave themselves an excuse to do anything they wanted. The Party wanted to create the perfect Utopia, so they thought that was the perfect excuse,While Columbus used his religion and power to do whatever he wanted. So to me what is the similarities between them?

Five hundred years ago, Christopher Columbus entered the Bahahmas Islands and immediatley began taking over everything. It was not until the Arawaks came and greeted him and his men nakedly with gifts and food, that he knew he had them in the palm of his hands. However, this was not all true. Things were told in a different way then how it really happened.

As of 1984, "Big Brother" is just like Christopher Columbus. He is made in the book to look like a good guy who is just helping others out, but he has his workers in the palm of his hands and he knows what he is doing. He rules over all of his workers and if they dont do it how he want it, they are punished. Their are consequences, just as Christpher Columbus did.

The way that Christopher Columbus treated the Arawaks, he had no other choice but to cover up how he really treated them. Punishment went as far was the Natives hands being cut off and them bleeding to death. Some even got burned to death, of course while they was still alive.

Whereas, "Big Brother" punished his workers by watching their every move. They couldnt really do anything because the whole time they was being watched by telescreens. If Winston wanted to read, he had to go in a dark corner and read or maybe even write.

Whatever Christopher Columbus did had a meaning to it. He sent the Arawaks to get golod so that he can be rich. If they didnt come back with what he wanted, he made them pay for it physically. And it was sickening.

"Big Brother" doesnt even have a meaning to that cruitty he does. He just do it to do it. I believe he get a kicks out of hurting his workers. But has no reason to what he do. Only to make other life a living hell.

So at the end of the day, "1984" and Christopher Columbus was very much alike. Then again, they had some differences. But for the most part, someone or someones were being controlled and punish by some leader. It all led back to that.

How are the efforts made by the Party in erasing the history of Oceania paralleled to the history we have been told about Christopher Columbus? The history was parralled to the history with between Christopher and Winston.

Christopher Columbus seemed to be very controlling with the people. He had a ship, that ship was full with men and ofcourse Christopher Columbus was there too. They were the one killing Native Americans. They had an exploring adventures and I would explain why.

Christopher Columbus was only concern in getting; gold ,slaves and land. Him and his crew were travelers to go find where the gold was. His biggest priority was to get gold. As he said " put no value on gold and other precious things". He got the land for Spain, which is why is big enough. He gave his slaves away to the King and Queen because they were going to use them and make them work in the field.

Christopher Columbus did the same thing Winston did in "1984". Christopher rewrited his history so he can look like a hero to others. In fact people did look at him as a hero. The people thought he was the greatest explore because he discovered the Carribean and the Indian. But the trick to it was because they didnt know how all this happen. They didnt know how the Native Americans got killed.

In "1984" Winston used to work in the record department. Big brother made himself look perfect infront of everybody. He had twisted the history and Winston rewrote it. And so since winston rewrote the history and made Big Brother look profesional in the party. Winston made the party look like a hero.

The similaries of Winston and Columbus that they made them seem look perfect and like heros. They both change there history into the great postive facts. No one really knew the truth between them.

In conclusion, I would of done the same as Winston and Columbus did. Because even though no one knew the truth they both got something out of it. It was just a rolling adventure.

Effort- Exertion of physical or mental power. History- Documentation of ones past. Paralleled- As used in the question meaning to differ from something. Many people saw Christopher Columbus as such a hero when he really was the head of what seemed like genocide. I feel that Big Brother and Christopher Columbus were alike in the way they tried to make things seem.

As a child I was always told that Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas. I was made to believe that he was this big icon that did such a great work. In the history books they don’t tell you about all the bloodshed or all the lives that were lost in the taking of the islands. In his writing Howard Zinn says, “it all starts with a heroic adventure---there is no bloodshed---and Columbus Day is a celebration.” He was referring to how Christopher Columbus was portrayed as such a big hero when he really wasn’t.

Zinn tells the true story of Columbus and how he really took over the Caribbean and what he had to do in order to conquer this region. The Arawaks where the inhabitants of the Caribbean when Columbus arrived. They showed Columbus that they had never seen someone who looked like him or beared the same arms he had. So he easily over took them and used them to get what he came for, land, gold, and slaves. Columbus wrote to king and queen of Spain, “as much gold as they need…and as many slaves as they ask.” He promised that if they funded his next voyage that he would give them what was in the above quote.

Columbus sent back five hundred men and of those five hundred only two hundred survived to step off that boat. Thus he fulfilled his promise to the king and queen. When he returned home he still felt that he had some obligations to the people of Spain so he went back to the Caribbean to get more gold and slaves. When he went back there was nomore gold to get so he hadn’t fulfilled his end of the bargain so he took his anger out on the Arawaks. He sent men, women, and children age 14 and older to retrieve the gold. Those who came back within the three-month period without a sufficient amount of gold didn’t receive a copper token. People caught without the token and I quote, “had their hands cut off and bled to death.”

Now that you see the dark truth behind this supposed hero you understand why they worked so hard to hide it. Howard Zinn said, “He does not omit the story of mass murder; indeed he describes it with the harshest word one can use: genocide.” Howard Zinn knew that he could not just admit and say, “Yes Columbus was a mass murderer.” To him that would have been too nice. So he used a word that made Columbus seem like the worse person alive, which was the word genocide. So when you did into someone’s past you see that everything isn’t always as it seems.

In the book “1984” you have your main character Winston. Winston works in the records department. He job entails him to basically rewrite history. He pulls up documents that either go against Big Brother or make Big Brother look bad and change them to Big Brother’s benefit. He reads the document the way he wants it to be typed and the speakwrite machine records whatever he dictates. The consequence for going against Big Brother and being caught is death. They watched your every move and listened to your every sound. They even monitored your thoughts. So even if you were suspected of being a traitor you would be executed. Sometimes they even held public hangings.

So in this book they have an example of what the History book writers did to Columbus’ story. They take the real evidence and hide it in the back where they think no one will find it. Back then in both scenarios people who rebelled or tried to show people the truth were “taken care of.” So eventually people gave up and stopped trying, but the people of the past can’t do anything about us revealing the truth now and showing people what really happened.

The history about Christopher Columbus to me I personally think is a piece of crap. I’m not saying that I don’t believe what they write about him and what he did but I just don’t like it. But really I can’t say that I think it is a piece of crap because something’s that I know are true those things still existed and were written in side of our history books. Some writers that wrote about Columbus they just did it to make him sound like he was the good guy. Then it was other writers that just felt like it was right to just tell the truth about Columbus.

Columbus and his men to me they had knowledge back in their time. So just imagine if Columbus were coming to you with a knife or sword what will you do? Will you do like the Arawaks or will you use your brain? So today what some humans do is just use common sense and that is what the Arawaks lacked because they couldn’t travel like Columbus and his people. So the history on how he treated other people that is what I believe is that he really didn’t care about them and I think that all he was trying to do is to just become wealthy.

On Monday we had a Men’s Empowerment Meeting. I found that very helpful that I know he is the principal and he should know this but he told us something. Mr. Kafele said “some people think that Columbus came to the western hemisphere because it was planned.” He said “no he was supposed to be going to India but he ended up in the Americas.” So I found that interesting that he really shared that with us. So Columbus ship went the wrong way because where he ended at in Americas and where India is he was nowhere near that. He was going to India for the gold but instead he found some clueless humans running around on land in their birthday suit.

So about that party erasing the history of Oceania that part is crazy. First, how can you erase history I really just don’t understand that part? Well I do but then I don’t I know what you can do, well what the law can do. They can erase someone’s existence and that is crazy. But what I do know is that someone will remember that person.

But also what you have to think about is that when they did erase what happened in the past which is called history. They understand that either people were there when that act happened or either what happened went worldwide. So in their history book it will never say that there was a bomb in New York City but in other country’s their book would say that in 1945: there was a dropped bomb in New York City. So really what I am trying to say is that you can erase something but there is always someone that knows the real truth so you can’t really hide it except from yourself.

Also what I think changing history can do is change opinions of people. So by them changing things might have made a difference and I day say that for a reason. I know how they say you can’t always believe movies but on this subject I do think that it is true. When some movies they go back in the past and try to stop someone from doing something and when they do they change the future. So by them changing the past I think will also mess with the future.

  12. So if you really combine 1984, with Columbus then you really would find that somewhat in the same content. First the way that I think that they both combine to me is that on both sides’ things was changed to make their side be kind of the good side. Second the way that people were treated, like certain pets you always have to keep an eye on them to make sure that they are not doing anything. So like 1984 they were always being watched and when Columbus caught come slave they were always watched. Lastly everyone always want to be known for being the man like Columbus he wanted to be the wan and he was the man and some still think he is. I say that because people still celebrate Columbus Day for what is what I want to know. What he did was kill people and take over and people are recognizing him for being a killer all the other Holidays have a reason and maybe his do to but I just don’t know.

The efforts made by the party in erasing the history of Oceania paralleled to the history that was told about Christopher Columbus in my opinion is all lies and the story about Christopher Columbus and 1984, are somewhat the same because in the story they make Columbus seem like some kind of hero and in the book 1984 they also lie about who the big brothers really are.
In the book 1984 it talks about how Winston as to make the big brothers look good and make it seem like they did all the work when they really didn't because winston is a bit lost about his who or what he is, where he's from or going. so in this case i would say their using him to make people think are better, so they look good in front of the people.
The ministry of truth contained three thousand rooms above ground level and corresponding ramification below the ministry of truth was actually all lies 2, because they told people a lot of convincing things about the records department, which was true, but the big brother were looking over someones work.
In the story Christopher Columbus, what Columbus wanted most was the gold and in search for that he would bring the Indians back as much gold as they need and also take women and children as slaves for sex and labor, by that a lot of people got killed and Columbus killed some e European and yet they call him a hero.
In the story they make it seem like Columbus is some great hero, but he really isn't and the story doesn't tell u that. zinn says in the story one can lie outright about the past. Or one can omit facts which might lead to unacceptable conclusion.

    Essay Quesstion:

Im writing this essay to tell you how Christopher Columbus and the ministry of truth is similar. They are both similar in their own ways. Their both not what you thought they were the opposite of what you heard of them. Christopher Columbus wasn't the man everyone thought he was and the ministry of truth wasn't either it was just as worst. I have same reasons to why I feel that way and I'm going to tell you.

Firstly I would like to say that the ministry of truth was the opposite of its name. The ministry of truth told nothing but lies. Big Brother was the main reason why the ministry of truth was filled with lies. Winston also helped they fooled the whole village. The village believed everything they were told.

The people in the village didn't know about anything that was going on. They were all brain washed into believing things that was not true. They were forced to live with less food and they were told that they are being given more than everyone else. The village people were treated bad and didn't even know it.

Christopher Columbus was not what everyone thought he was. He was know type of leader. Everyone thought he discovered another part of the world purposely but the truth is he did it by mistake. Christopher Columbus wasn't even sure where he was at. So basicly he found america from being lost.

Christopher Columbus had slaves which alot of people didnt know. He also use to rape women that were his slaves which is not a good thing. He did alot of things and people covered up for him thats how Christopher Columbus and the ministry of truth is so similar.
People covered up things for Columbus. Just like Winston did for big brother people use to do for Columbus. Winston was the worst though he even created a fictional character to hide the truth. He was ashamed of himself but he did what he had to do. That the thing i like about Winston he do as he is told to survive.
In conclusion the ministryof truth and Christopher Columbus is similar in certain ways. They both were not what you thought they were. They did bad thinhgs and people covered those things up. The ministry of truth didnt tell the truth all of the time people use to change the information around to make Big Brother seem good. Everyone think Christopher Columbus found America intentionally but the truth is he really didnt historians changed some information around to make it seem that way. Thats how they are similar.
