Irony is used almost everyday. There are three types of irony that can be used Verbal, Dramatic, && situational. In the novel “1984” by George Orwell he uses irony in the beginning. George uses Dramatic irony to indirectly describe his whereabouts’. In this descriptive essay we will discuss the novel.
The novel discusses a character by the name of Wintston Smith. Mr. Smith is a middle-aged male who use to be apart of the party. He appears that he is from London, which is in France. In the novel it had stated, “He tried to squeeze out some childhood memory that should tell him whether London had always quite like this” this gave a clue he is from London. Mr. Smith seems to be an unhealthy man.
In Conclusion Wintston has a very descriptive name. Wintston means “ from a friendly country” && smith is a common Last name. From this it seems to be an implied discrepancy. From the Looks of it Wintston name is meant for him because he’s from London && London is a very Friendly country .

In the book "1984" Winston Smith is a thirty-nine year old man living in the nation of Oceania. Winston Smith is a low-ranking member of this ruling party in London. It seems every where he goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s leader, or the charater I believe who doesn't appear in this book, Big Brother. I recall from the book saying "The telescreen recieved and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made (or anybody in this case), above the level of a very low whispher, would be picked up but it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which metal plaque comamanded, he could be seen as well as heard."The Party controls everything Winstons nation. From what I read so far Winston lives in a very controling country.
I did in fact find a implied discrepancy in the name Winston Smith. Besides the meaning you gave us I think it came from something else. I believe the name Winston Smith derived from anthoer book called "Negative Utopia". Utopia means "ideal place". Winston mean "from a friendly country" and Smith is a common name. In my opinion its very common for a society to try to have the ideal society. But power madness seems to take over and instead of having a perfect society they have an out of control society.

The story George Orwell starts talking about a man named Winston Smith. Winston Smith is like a poor prisoner because he has something around his ankles and guards monitor what he does. But is not like any normal prisoner, he will get killed or sent to do labor if he does something wrong. In the story it said if the guards find out he has a diary will get killed or sent to a labor camp. What he has around his ankles is separate him from the normal people. Winston also works at the records department.

This story takes place in London. The place were Winston lives in is like slums. But it has things that make it worse than the slums. It has houses falling apart and rocket bombs are shot at the city. In the story it is also said that there the ministry of truth slogan which where “War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength.”

The name Winston means friendly country and smith is a common name. So the implied difference means that Winston Smith the character doesn’t live in a friendly country. His name which means friendly country is nothing like where he is living in. The reason why is they will kill u for nothing, like for having a diary and they throw rocket bombs at his city and when he does something he looks out the window to see if there is a guard around. That is the difference from his name and were he lives in.

Open Ended Question 1: Pages 1-29

In the novel "1984" Wintston Smith is a man from London. Wintston Smith was returning to his home. Wintston was a thin, frail man in his late 30's. His apartment building was a mess. Everything was always in bad shape. The apartment was old it was in terrible shape the elevator was always out of order.

Wintston Smith use to be apart of a party. The party was a totalitarian political regime that rules all of Airstrip One. Airstrip one was the land that used to be called England. It as part of the larger state of Oceania. When Wintston was in his home he was always on something called telescreen.

I believe Wintson Smith name has something to do with the country he came from. Wintston means from a friendly country. I would say that England is a friendly country so i guess thats why he got that name. I dont really understand why his last name was Smith because it means common and he is not a common man. He is very different in a way. He writes in his dairy all the time, to me he is very independent. He always do things alone he really dont have anyone i guess thats what makes him so different.

  5. The book 1984 explains the main character Winston Smith. He was a thirty nine year old man who had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle. He works in one of the four Ministries that serve in the entire government of Oceania. The Ministry are divided into different categories: The Ministry of Truth, controls all forms of media, entertainment, and arts; the Ministry of Peace, which concerns itself with war; the Ministry of Love, which maintains love and order; and the Ministry of Plenty, which is responsible for economic affairs.
Winston Smith basically lives in a filthy building that smells of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. He lives in London in a city called Victory Mansion. He hated women especially pretty ones because he thought most pretty women just used their body to get what they want, who are part of the state of Ocenania. One night while at the meeting, a dark haired girl, started to shout “Slime! Slime! Slime!”, because of the traitor who betrayed the group. His name was Goldstein.
Winston hated himself for wanting women because he couldn’t have them. His group theme that always showed up was “War is Peace”, “Freedom is Slavery”, “Ignorance is Strength”. Winston had a lot going on in his head that was vile and disgusting. His moods towards the Brotherhood changed from hate to admiration. So far my reading has given me an insight about Winston’s Smith.

Everyday, irony is used. No matter where you go or what you are doing, you or someone else is using irony. In this story, irony was used at the beginging. They started off by explaining where Wintson was, the weather and the time.

Winston was a 39 yeard old man living in Oceania. He's poor and lonely. Living alone, as a prisoner, he is being watched by telescreens. Every room he goes in, there is a telescreen. He knows its there but he hates to face it. He states that even if his back is turned, facing the telescreen, he is still feeling watched. He is a prisoner in his own home.

Winston means "from a friendly country", whereas Smith is just a common last name. I believe Winston does fit the man. Even though he is in prison, he has a positive attitude about everything. The name does fit the man.

Winston Smith is a very resilient person. He doesn’t like the idea of the changes that’s going on. He lives in a dilapidated apartment in a place called victory Mansion. He’s a thirty-nine year-old man. It is hard for him to walk up the stairs because he has a varicose ulcer right above his right ankle. The elevator in his building hardly ever worked. “It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working…”

Winston lives in London. The party he’s apart of rules all of what used to be Europe. This strip that they rule is a small part of the big Oceania. “London, chief city of Airstrip One, itself the third most populous of the provinces of Oceania.” This quote shows that Winston was apart of one of the most successful companies in Europe at this time. Even though he was apart of this huge corporation he still felt like the same was oppressing him.

Winston is an insignificant official in the party. In his room you have this big thing called a telescreen. This big instrument is thought to be used by the Thought Police to monitor the citizens. From Winston’s name it’s implied that he is from a place that is so good and high and mighty. In fact the way Winston sees it is as the slums of London. I think that they are implying that where Winston is from is such a good place when in all actuality its not.

In "1984" George Orwell introduces Winston Smith. Winston Smith is the victim of life in a hard country. He faces the life of being tracked by the thought police of his slum. The thought police can track what he is doing or saying at any given moment. He is periodically watched and never notified. Smith is apart of the Ministry of Truth and is a member with a very low rank. The story of Winston Smith takes place in London.
"BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU". A direct quote from the text explains Winston's participation in the Ministry of Truth. By the look of things it seems as thought Mr.Winston is being scouted by a member of a higher rank. The quote leads me to believe that Winston is in some sort of scouting or training. Due to the metal plate that monitors him at all times.

I did not find an implied discrepancy between the two names. Winston although it means "friendly country" has nothing to do with where he is. Winston lives in a slum where places are falling apart and bombs are launched in the slum's direction. Where he lives is far from the discrepancy that can be implied. His name and where he is are total opposites. Thefore no discrepancy was found while reading and reviewing.

In the book “1984” the main character is Winston Smith. He is Thirty-nine years old. He lives in a nation called Oceania. He has a varicose ulcer above upper right ankle. Every where he goes he is being watched. Under posters on wall it said big brothers watching. It looked like it followed you when you moved. They had telescreens that talked. Though it could be dimmed it could not be turned off.

The three slogans of the party were WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. In the book “1984” there were four ministries in which the government was divided. They were Ministry of Truth, Ministry of peace, Ministry of love, Ministry of plenty. Each one has its own meaning and its own purpose. Our government has three branches.

Winston Smith sounds like a regular name. But Winston means “from a friendly country” and Smith is just a regular name. It seams that the community he lives In is perfect. It makes shore you do not do anything wrong. Though there are blind spots where they can see you. I think so far that were he lives is fine. If he doesn’t know what year he was born how does he know what his real name? The community could have gave him the name Winston.

Winston Smith was thirty-nine years old, and he had a swollen ulcer above his ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. His hair was very fair, his face naturally positive. Winston kept his back to the telescreen he thought that it was safer; though, as he well knew, even a back can be revealing. Winston could not remember anything of his childhood except a series of bright-lit tableaux, occurring against no background and mostly unintelligible. Winston was an insignificant official that ruled the entire airstrip one.. Winston lived in London , Oceania .

Winston Smith works in one of the four Ministries that serve in the entire government of Oceania . The Ministry is divided into different categories: The Ministry of Truth controls all forms of media, entertainment, and arts; the Ministry of Peace, which concerns itself with war; the Ministry of Love, which maintains love and order; and the Ministry of Plenty, which is responsible for economic affairs.

The name Winston means from a friendly country. Smith is an occupational name for a worker in metal. So to me I really don’t think that these names have anything in common. The name Winston you really don’t hear that name a lot so that name to me is not common. But the last name smith that is a very common last name and I think that everyone knows someone with the last name smith.

Winston smith is a thirty-nine year old mean who leaves in London in a glass door victory mansions with a hallway that had smelts of boiled cabbage and old rag mets. he had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, and he also wondered if London had always been quite and also id there were vistas of rotting nineteenth-century house.

Winston has never been inside the ministry of love withing half a kilometer of it, was a place impossible to enter except on official business or someone who works there than only by penetrating through a maze of barbed-wire entanglement, steel doors and hidden machine-gun nest.

The name Winston means joyful rock which is not a very common name around here and the name smith is the most common family name, surname in the U.K and the United States representing more than 1 out or every 100 person in each of these countries

Everyday irony is used by everybody in any different way. In "1984", the author starts off the book with irony about where winston is, the weather and the day. Winston is an 39-year old man who lives in Oceania, who is being controlled by others such as Big Brother who watches everybodys moves on a telescreen.

I could find a difference between the names because "winston" means from a friendly country and "smith" is a common last name. Winston to me means quiet and friendly also happy and smith is a common name between everybody in that world. The difference is not surprising because winston is a shy and quiet person all the time.

The names are not completely diffrent but slightly compatible in a way. This world is a utopia world which means to me a world created all in the mind while thinking and putting together peices. Its creation is an imagination to others but real to you, it may come to reality, sometimes it may not.
