“He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself”. Winston came to realize based of the following quote about his and its meaning is that , when he finally got taking the steps he need to get his freedom it was too late. Winston was always afraid to break any rules. He was always scared that the Thought Police would come and take him during the night the others. Winston’s life was always under the Party’s oppressive political control.
ReplyDeleteHe was always watched by a device called the telescreen which was said to be monitored by the Thought Police. In a small drawer Winston toke out the dairy he bought from a second hand store and stared to write in it. From doing this he considers himself a Thought- Criminal and he starts to think he is doomed. Winston’s government rules their people by physical and psychological manipulation to get power. In the book its describes that everyday all the citizens are required to attend a Two Minutes Hate, that intense the people hatred toward the Oceania’s rival nations.
Winston remembers a dream in which a man’s voice,O’Brien’s, he thinks—said to him, “We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.” Winston writes in his diary that his thoughtcrime makes him a dead man, then he hides the book. He does really know the reason why he got the diary but he thinks that he might be able to write all his experiences in the book for the future or something. He thinks that when the Thought Police finds him they will destory everything he has including the diary.
The qoute that Winston mentioned really just expresses that is was not afraid to die anymore because at the Two Minutes Hate meeting that he was not alone when it comes to his feelings about his Government. After he catches O’Brien’s eyes, so after that he finally has the strength to put into words his thoughts and feelings. The Party’s Government wanted to create a perfect Utopia, But they just destroying the people Emotion and physically making them easy to manipulate.
At the Two Minutes Hate meeting by watching the video and seeing how the people starts to behave during and after his feeling toward Oceania’s rival nations turned to adoration. He was blinded by all the things his country was doing but by seeing the rage and hate the people expressing he really realized. . He thought the other nations were brave to put against Oceania and not be afraid of the consequences if their actions.
So the quote to me means that he going to face his fears and. He After what he saw he doesnt care anymore. He wants people to Know his feelings and thoughts. He was always wanted his freedom and now he has his chance he is going to take because he was not th only person to want freedom and not be punish for it.

He was already dead, he reflected. i think Winston is a bit confused about his life, like about who he is, where he's from, his age, everything that has to do with his life and everything and everyone around him.
On page 3, the second paragraph talks about how winston trys to squeeze out some childhood memory that would tell him whether london had always been quite like this, he wondered if these vistas of rotting nineteenth-century houses and their side shored up with balks of timber with windows patched with cardboard and their roofs with corrugated irons.
He doesn't seem to remember anything around him, like not been sure whether he was born in 1944 or 1945, everything around him seems new and or different. His mind hovered for moments around the doubtful that on the page, he fetched up with a bump against the newspeak word doublethink.
Winston's life had always been watched by a device call the telescreen, which was monitored by the police and he was under the party's oppressive political control. he always had his back turned on the telescreen it was safer that way.
For a period of time Winston's life meant meaningless to him because most times he would just originally forget what he intended to say, for times he sat gazing stupidly at papers the decisive ac, and write his small clumsy letters.
Most days Winston writes sheer panic only imperfectly aware of what he was setting down. Winston has a childish but small handwriting the straggled up and down on the page as he writes, shedding first in capital letters and it's full stops.
Winston stopped writing because he was suffering from cramp for writing to much, but he didn't know what had caused his rubbish. Most time when something comes to mind that might have had something to do with his past he writes it down so he could try to remember everything all together.

ReplyDeleteWhen people have no freedom and live in a place that if they break any rules they die, it is like they are already dead. The reason for that is they can’t do anything a real person could do. Also were they are living, like if they are poor and houses falling apart. This will make them think they will have no point of living. That is how Winston was feeling.
Winston was living a poor and sad life. Houses falling apart and streets are dirty. Rocket bombs are thrown at the city each week. Aside from all that he is being watched. Every thing he does is being watched. There are cameras in his house and outside, to see if anyone breaks rules.
The ones controlling the cameras are guards. The guards work for “Big Brother.”
Big Brother is the name they used for the government which knows everything that happen. Then if someone breaks their rules they kill them a send them to do labor. They do that to create a Utopian city.
The government or Big Brother wanted to manipulate people physically and also mentally. This led Winston thinking about other places. He thought about how other people could do things without worrying about the consequences. So Winston decided he was going to have freedom. Winston decided to a keep a diary.
He knew they were going to kill him or send him to do labor if they found out he had a diary. So he hid in the blind spots of the cameras so they won’t see him writing in his diary. Even with the diary he was still afraid. In the story it said that sometimes he would just write any as fast as he could not caring if it was misspelled or if it made sense.
This probably made Winston feel more alive. The thought that he could get in trouble probably gave him a purpose. He probably didn’t care if he was going to die anymore. I think he wanted to be different from all the other dull meaningless lives.
In conclusion the quote meant that his life was similar to being dead because he couldn’t live it. So he didn’t care if he was dead or alive. He that because the way he was living. How they manipulated him. So he was going to do something an act which was having a diary because if they killed him he probably would better off.

What he came to realize is that this was the first time he could have followed his mind and did what he wanted to do. He also came to realize that he waited all this time going by big brothers rules that he could have did what he wanted. He also realized that he there wasn’t a point of living or doing what he wanted to do because it was to late.
What he also realized was that it was to late for him to write something in his diary. the reason being is because he knew it was a matter of seconds until they came for him. He also realized that he was going to get caught writing in his diary even if he was to write i it at that time. He realizes that everything was wrong and he wishes that he can take it back.
Winston also realizes that now he was going to have to pay for what he did. He realizes that the consequences he was going to get was going to be serious. He also realizes that everything he did, he really didn’t mean for it to get out of hand. He also realizes that he might be living in even more poor environment now that big brother knows what’s gong on.
He also realizes that he should have thought about the consequences he was going to have serve if big brother ever found out, which he did. He also realizes that the consequences might involve him getting hurt. Winston also realizes that now that big brother knows what’s going on the only reason why big brother s after him is because he thinks he lost all his power he had over everybody. He also realizes that now he might have to start over with his life.
Winston also realizes that now wouldn’t be a good time to become clean about him writing in his diary. He also realizes that now that big brother knows he has nothing else to live for he mind as well not be on earth. He also realizes that he has nothing else and that nobody is be his side. The reason being is because everybody knows that big brother is more powerful and he will try to manipulate anyone.

In the quote “He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself.” It showed what Winston had came to realize about his life && the meaning of it. When Winston had decided to want to be a Freeman && be his own authority It was a little too late for that. Winston had become so equip with the rules that he was so afraid to disobey the rules. Winston was always filled with Apprehension, he began to think the Thought Police would come && abduct him in the Middle of the night along with others. His life was controlled by the party everyday of the week && every hour in the day.
The citizens of Utopia were watched daily on a device called the telescreen, which was stated to be monitored by the Thought Police, to watch their every move. Winston started to keep a diary, which he brought from a second hand store in one of his small drawers. He then started to write down his very intense dreams. By Winston doing this he thought of himself to be a Thought-Criminal && soon thought he would be caught and reprimanded. “Big Brother” the citizens government rules the people with shrewdly physical and psychological manipulation to gain power of Utopia.
As stated in the book everyday all of Utopias citizens are required to attend a Ritual “Two Minutes Hate”, which the people show their hatred for other Oceania nations that their in competition with. Winston had remembered a dream where he came across a mans voice which he believed he said to him, “We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.” Winston wrote about it in his diary that from him committing thought crimes he is about to be caught && made a mockery of, then he takes the book && hides it somewhere sacred. He’s not really sure as to why the diary was purchased. According to him it can be used to write down his intense thoughts for future references, because he believes when the thought police finds him they will dismantle his belongs including his diary.
Winston mentioned a quote, which really just displayed that he was careless of dieing. He displayed these actions because during the ritual “Two Minutes Hate” he began to notice he was not the only citizen with strong hatred for “Big Brother”. After he noticed that he felt that finally he has the strength he’d been looking for all along to verbalize it. Big Brother thought he was creating a ideal Utopia, but instead they we’re just destroying everything and everyone in the Nation. After people saw on videos how the way Winston started to express himself more aloud changed the other citizens during && after “Two Minutes Hate” ritual caused the rival nations to have profound love.
This seems like it made Winston feel more free and alive. I think he wanted to be different from all the other dull meaningless lives. Winston stopped writing because he was suffering from cramps in his hand for writing too much, but he didn't know what had caused his rubbish. Usually when something came to his mind that may have had something to do with his past he wrote it down so he could try to remember everything all together at one time.
In conclusion the quote && his life was similar to him being dead because he couldn’t live his life the way he wanted too. That’s what made him not care if he was deceased or alive. Winston was manipulated and had no type of life or freedom. So he chose to have a diary && write everything down because if they killed him he probably would better off.
"He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself." Winston , a country man, had began taking steps to what he wanted to do.
ReplyDeleteWintson, a 39-year old, was being watched by his Big Brother in something what seemed like a prison. After beign watched so long by telescreens and walls, Wintson couldnt take anymore of it. He needed to be free, some way, some how.
Only thing that kept Winston entertained after a while was his writing. That was the only way he could express his thoughts and feelings. But he couldnt do this normally. He had to go in a quiet placde where he couldnt be seen. That was the only privacy he really had.
The quote is really stating how Wintson snapped back into reality and realized that he had a life to live and how much it really meant to him. He could no long and no longer wanted to be up under "Big Brother". It all wasnt worth it. He realized that he wanted to live his own life and not let someone live it for him.
"He was already dead", was correct. Basically Winston was. Being that someone else was ruling his life, he was very lifeless. All he could do was write. And after a while, that came to a end. Wintson started writing too much and he began getting cramps in his hand and he could no longer write anymore. So little by little, his life was coming to a end. Slowly, but surely.

Based on the above quote what Winston came to realize was that he is a dead man. So now the important thing to Winston is to stay alive as long as possible. Winston wrote that “Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime IS death.” So Winston used the word entail the word entail means the limiting of the future ownership of bequeath property of particular descendants. So Winston believes that thoughtcrime will limit his future.
Thoughtcrime was mentioned in this section a lot some of the times where when. Winston said that thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. Winston said “it was always at night the arrests invariably happened at night. The sudden jerk out of sleep the rough hand shaking your shoulder. Lights glaring in your eyes the ring of hard faces round the bed.
When Winston began to have thoughts that’s when his life began. But I think that is how people in prison feel there always being watched but the only time that they can feel free about is when they have thought about things. So like prison Winston was always being watched and like everyone there is always someone watching you. Winston had to hide to live life to write down things so that he wouldn’t for get things.
A time when I thought that Winston was living life was when he was dreaming of his mother. He thought he was ten or eleven when his mother disappeared. His father he remembered more vaguely as dark and thin, dressed in dark clothes. At that moment his mother was sitting in some place deep down beneath him, with his young sister in his arms. He did not remember his sister at all, except as a tiny, feeble baby. Winston dreamed that they were in some subterranean place the bottom of the well.
He could not remember what had happened, but he knew in his dream that in some way the lives of his mother and his sister had been sacrificed to his own. The dream that he had was a dream which while retaining the characteristic dream which one becomes aware of facts and ideas. So this was the time when I think that Winston was free. When he began to dream that was life he probly even thought that he was living the life.
The consequences of every act are included in the act itself. What I think that means is that when you do something you don’t suppose to in you get in trouble then what you did your consequence is in your act. So if I got caught cheating on a test then my consequence should be to fail that test and get sent to the office. Winston knew what his consequence was if he was to get caught with that diary that’s why he always worried about the thought police.
In conclusion if Winston was to hear this quote what I think he would say is “I pretty much lived on this quote.” So Winston came to realize that he isn’t really living his own life. I think that if Winston was living now he really wouldn’t need a diary. But having diary can still be useful because you can always write down important things or something that happened to you. So to me I think that Winston have a lot in common with this quote
He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself. This quote has alot to do with the meaning of Winston life. Im going to tell you what I feel about this quote.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I would like to say that everyone in this story is controlled. That has alot to do with the quote. No one can be thereself and thats not good. They aslo controlled people emotions. Thats why everyone seemed to be walking around like zombies died but alive at the same time.
Secondly, no one had freedom. That made everyone depressed and lonesome. I know I would feel that way rreading this novel really lets you know how good we have it in America now. I understand why people including Winston acted the way they did. It had to hurt them in the inside.
Thirdly, I would like to say that Winston was living like he was dead because they controlled him plus his emotions. Winston did not like how he was living either because they had to do everything the same. If anyone broke the rules they would die. I wouldnt know what to do with myself if I had to live like that. Reading this novel help me really appreciate what I have today.
Fourthly, i would like to state that everyone was being watched constantly. Just imagine that having no privacy. Having no freedom, you could only do what your told to or you would die that is unbelieveable. I cant see how people survived going threw all of that.
To me everyone was living there life like they were dead. They were like robots they were told what and what not to do. It was like they were programed or something. They were also getting brain washed at the same time. It seemed like they were all brain washed except for Winston.
In conclusion Winston was being controlled and had no freedon. No one had privacy and couldnt do what they wanted to do. If they broke the rules they would be killed. Lastly no one could be thereself and do what they want to do. Thats why i feel that they were all living like they were dead and thats why the quote and the novel is similar.

Essay Question #2
P9
Consquence is the effect , result, or outcome of something occurring earlier. Realization is the making or being made real of something imagined, planned. Life is a corresponding state, existence, or principle of existence conceived of as belonging to the soul. “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”-Maria Robinson. How can we live life when the surprises of life itself holds us back?
"He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step..." I think Winston had more of a revolation. He had to figure out what was life really about. The way he was living was rediculous so he would label himself as dead because the life he was living wasn't life at all. I also believe that it came to his realization that he couldn't live that way anymore. He had to do something about it.
"The consequences of every act are included in the act itself." Winston was living in this so call "utopia". Utopia means a perfect society. In fact it was a "negative utopia". I believe that whoever was in charge seemed to become either power hungry or over did it when it came to making everything just right. Instead of making everything perfect, it just suffocated the population of Oceania from being what it is truly meant to be.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard Thurman. I think Winston realized something that the present day world has not seem to grasp yet. Life is about acting. With every action there is a consequnce. We are surpose to learn from our consqunces.
The quote is really stating how Wintson realized that he had a life to. He could no long be watched by "Big Brother". It all wasn't worth it at all. It wasn't worth sending his whole entire life being watched. He realized that he wanted to live his own life and be his own person and not let someone live it for him.
I believe Winston wanted us to learn from his mistakes. He wants us to be different. We are watched 24/7 but we can't let it control our lives. We have to take life as it is an learn from everything and everyone around us.
If your stuck in a rut, there are no actions being made. If there are no actions being made, therefore you can't learn form your consquences. If you can't learn form your consequnces, then what is life? I believe this was the point Winston was trying to make. Life is trying new things and learning and gaining experience from what you witness.
Santara Osborne: Us History, P-9
ReplyDeleteReflect- To think ponder or meditate. Realize- To grasps or understands clearly. Consequences- The effect, result, or outcome of something, which occurred earlier. Many people live for a very long time without even knowing the true meaning of their life and they die not ever knowing why they were truly put on this earth. Winston learned that he truly wasn’t happy doing what he did which was working for the government so he felt his true purpose was to take down “Big Brother.”
“He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself.” In Winston’s case this quote means a lot. I believe it means that as soon as Winston began to realize that he has a chance at formulating a plan to get away from or even get rid of Big Brother he can’t do it. He knows that if the Thought Police find out about his thoughts about taking Big Brother down he will be “dealt” with. He knew that the consequences of his act were actually in committing the act itself.
Winston was raised basically to conform to the shape of the government. Big Brother, the government, was always said to be watching you in one-way or another. They had different branches of government that would monitor each person in a different way. The worse part of the government that monitored you was the Thought Police. The thought Police where said to monitor your thoughts. So if you said much as thought about conspiring against the government you would be punished.
Winston never really liked the way he lived. He never really had a way to change his situation so he just lived by the cards he was dealt. After living so many years conforming and doing what he was told he began to get sick and tired of Big Brother. Winston began to have dreams about a certain individual. He believed this individual was O’Brien and in the dream this person would say, “We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.” Winston believes that him and O’Brien have the same motive, which is to take down Big Brother.
After realizing him and O’Brien had the same motive Winston felt like he had some help. Another thing that monitored the people in their rooms was something called a telescreen. The telescreen monitored your movements and what you said and did. The telescreen monitored just about all of Winston’s room. There was this one little corner of the room that the telescreen couldn’t see but could hear what was going on.
After Winston woke up from his dream he went to this corner of his room. He pulled out the diary that he purchased a few days before. He wrote down in big bold black letters “Down With Big Brother.” Even though Winston knew the telescreen couldn’t see him he was still scared the Thought Police would find out. He didn’t want to close the book because the ink was still wet. There was a knock at his door and Winston was startled. He thought it was The Thought Police coming to get him. He opened the door only to see Mrs. Parsons from across the hall standing at his doorstep.
So far Winston is beginning to find the true meaning to his life. We know from reading that Winston is not a fan of Big Brother or the way he runs things. Winston seems determined to reach his goal. In his diary he writes, “they’ll shoot me I don’t care they’ll shoot me in the back of the neck I don’t care down with big brother they always shoot you in the back of the neck I don’t care down with big brother.” From my final quote you see that no matter what it takes Winston is determined to take down Big Brother. Even his life is a mere fatality to reaching his goal.
He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself." This quote means alot to the storyline of the book and how it continues. The quote tells of how "he" has already died and reflected it. Within the next few paragraphs I will break the quote down for better understanding.
ReplyDeleteThe consequences of every act are included in the act itself. Meaning all moves made which are consequiential are made in itself. For example if someone knows an assignment is due it is their responsibilty to get the assignment done. Winston Smith knew the possible consequences of his actions thats why he makes smart decisions.Which was very smart of him
Decisive-determining or having the power to determine an outcome. Winston Smith was a decisive person. The quote explains how he was taking the step that would decide everything. In his mind everything was made up and the decision was set but he realized he had more to do.
Although Winston was a very decisive person he still was being watched by "big brother" also known as the government. With him being watched he had many problems. His patience was tested many times by big brother. Just knowing that your being watched hurts enough.
This quote came about when Smith was reflecting. I believe Smith reflects on his life alot. He lives in a slum for one in a bad situations. He's being watched by "big brother" which makes his life even more miserable.Smith has it bad so far in my opinion.
While reflecting Smith formulated his thoughts and came up with a decision. I for one dont know what decision was made but I know it was cut short. His immediate reaction was that "he was already dead". This means that the reflecting sent a negative vibe through Smith.
In conclusion Winston Smith is suffering. He feels dead inside. Due to all of the things going on with big brother. Smith is truly sick according to the quote and it is no suprise to me or anyone else.
