ESSAY QUESTION OPTIONS
1. Explain how Mark Twain uses irony to make a statement about individualism and hypocrisy in American Society.
2. How are the ideas behind the reasons to which American Colonists came to settle relate to the plot and theme of the book "Huckleberry Finn"?
3. If the idea of a hero in American society is based on following the dictates of law and order, how do we reconcile Huck as a hero? How does ones consciousness in knowing the right and wrong of a situation determine the acceptance of that person in society?
4. Of all the contradictions in Huckleberry Finn, the most troublesome is Twain's treatment of Jim. At first he appears to be a minstrel show-like caricature: superstitious and ignorant. As the novel progresses he is revealed to be sensitive, caring, insightful, and a good friend to Huck. And he is capable of giving as good as he gets, suggesting to Huck that he is "trash" for his cruel prank of pretending to be dead. Yet, just as Huck comes to recognize Jim's' inherent dignity, suddenly Tom Sawyer arrives on the scene, and the poignancy gives way to crude farce. To Tom, Jim is nothing more than fodder for his childish games: we expect this from him, but what do we make of Huck's apparent willingness to go along with it - and Twain's apparent willingness to put Jim in such a humiliating position? What does that say about race in America?
5. Was Mark Twain trying to promote the degradation of Black Americans or was he an abolitionist, explain using examples from the book and statistics on slavery during the 19th century?
ESSAY IS DUE IN TWO WEEKS ON FEBRUARY 19TH 2010.
